What is Dehydration? Let's Find Out!
Have you ever been super thirsty after playing in the sun? That’s your body asking for water! When you don't have enough water inside you, it's called dehydration. It means your body doesn't have the water it needs to work its best.
How Do You Get Dehydrated?
You lose water when you sweat, pee, and even when you breathe! You usually get it back by drinking and eating. But sometimes, you lose water faster than you replace it. This can happen when:
You're Playing Hard: Running around, especially when it's hot, makes you sweaty and red-faced.
You're Sick: If you have a fever, a tummy ache, or a sore throat, it can be hard to drink enough.
How Can You Tell If You're Dehydrated?
Feeling very, very thirsty
Feeling dizzy or super tired
Having a dry mouth and lips
Peeing less than usual, and your pee is dark yellow
How Can You Stay Safe?
The best thing is to not get dehydrated in the first place!
When You Play: Drink water before, during, and after you play. Take breaks in the shade and wear cool clothes.
When You're Sick: Take tiny sips of water or juice. Eating an ice pop is a fun way to get fluids too!
What Drinks Should You Avoid?
Stay away from sugary drinks like soda and some fruit punches. They have stuff in them that can actually make you lose more water! Water is always the best choice.
When Should You Ask for Help?
If you feel very sick, dizzy, or can't keep any fluids down, it's time to tell a parent or grown-up right away. They can help you feel better, and sometimes a doctor can help get fluids back into your body quickly.
Remember: Drink water often, especially when you're active or not feeling well, to keep your body happy and healthy.
